POLOKWANE STRENGTHENS COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND DELIVERY WITH NEW R16 MILLION ROAD REHABILITATION ROLLOUT
This morning, Executive Mayor of Polokwane Municipality, Cllr Makoro John Mpe convened a stakeholder briefing session in the City Cluster, introducing upcoming road rehabilitation projects in Bendor, Ivy Park, Penina Park and Polokwane Central as municipality’s continued commitment to inclusive governance and ensuring that affected communities are informed and consulted before work begins in their areas.
Executive Mayor announced that roads set for rehabilitation include Neethling, Pierre, Rhodesdrift, Crescent, Paruri, Campbell and Oost streets. The three-month project, which will start soon, carries an investment value of R16 million.
Importantly, the municipality has opted to manage the project in-house, without appointing external consulting engineers. This deliberate decision reduces overhead costs and also redirects funds where they matter most into actual service delivery. “We are proving that public funds can go further when managed wisely,” said Executive Mayor Mpe.
Since 2022, Polokwane has moved away from the costly cycle of regravelling roads, only to see the work undone by seasonal rains. Instead, a more sustainable model has been adopted: roads will be tarred where possible; if not, paved; and only regravelled using the municipality’s own yellow fleet.
The Executive Mayor also reaffirmed the city’s ongoing “War on Potholes,” which has evolved into a broader road resurfacing initiative already evident in the rehabilitation of Dorp, Grobler, Thabo Mbeki, Church, Bodenstein, R101, and most recently, Nelson Mandela Drive.
While the municipality actively promotes local employment in these projects, quality remains non-negotiable. “We welcome local participation, but not at the expense of standards. Every project must reflect value for money,” the Executive Mayor stressed.
With strategic planning, cost-conscious management and visible delivery, Polokwane continues to position itself as a city on the rise, building durable roads and restoring public confidence.
