#MandelaDay2025 | A TOUCHING GESTURE AS POLOKWANE EXECUTIVE MAYOR OFFERS JOBS ON THE SPOT DURING MANDELA DAY ACTIVITIES
Extension 44, Polokwane – 18 July 2025
In a heartwarming and unexpected moment during the Nelson Mandela Day commemorations in Extension 44, the Executive Mayor of Polokwane Municipality, Cllr Makoro John Mpe, demonstrated what true servant leadership looks like.
While leading a series of service delivery activities ranging from pothole patching and streetlight repairs to waste collection, grass cutting, and addressing water supply challenges, the Executive Mayor made an extraordinary and emotional gesture that left the community both inspired and hopeful.
Moved by the spirit of Ubuntu and visibly touched by the presence of unemployed residents who had volunteered to assist in the day’s activities, Mayor Mpe announced an immediate and life-changing intervention. Without hesitation, he instructed that the participating unemployed individuals be hired on the spot under the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), so they can begin earning a living and put food on the table for their families.
“We cannot observe Nelson Mandela Day in word only. Today is about action. It’s about restoring dignity and giving people real, tangible hope,” said Mayor Mpe, addressing residents and officials. “I am deeply moved by the community’s willingness to participate, even when they themselves have little. That spirit must be rewarded.”
He further instructed municipal Executive Directors to intensify the rollout of EPWP job opportunities—specifically targeting areas like Extension 44 and similar communities where unemployment remains high.
The announcement was met with cheers, ululation, and tears of joy from residents, many of whom have long awaited opportunities to work and support their families. For them, Mandela Day 2025 became not just a day of service but a turning point in their lives.
Polokwane Municipality is empowering communities and responding directly to the real needs of the people, not with promises but with immediate action.
As the legacy of Nelson Mandela calls on each of us to “take action and inspire change,” Polokwane Municipality has once again proven that true leadership means lifting others up, especially when it matters most.
