Home of over 920 schools, Polokwane can boast about its educational facilities, which produce students of the highest calibre. The bulk of the schools in the city are public schools that are government funded, but, in addition to this there are several private schools most of whom are members of ISASA, the Independent Schools Association of South Africa. Several of these schools start learners at the age of 5 and they continue their education through the junior, intermediate and college phases at the same facility. With outstanding results overall, many learners from these facilities qualify for University entrances.
Pathways, a school for the mentally and physically challenged is recognized world wide for its work with the challenged children and their inclusion into normal education curriculums. Attached to Mitchell House, a school of excellence, this facility attracts visitors and researchers from the world over.
UNISA (University of South Africa) has a satellite campus in Polokwane. Its lecture halls accommodate over 200 students and it has micro laboratories, video conferencing facilities, a vast library and a 350 seated multipurpose hall. Special care has been taken at the campus to accommodate the needs of physically disabled learners.
Another campus in Polokwane is the home of the Tshwane University of Technology. The merger between the various technical colleges in Gauteng and the North West Province created this uniquely South African institute which then became a “University of Technology” which is internationally accepted.
Other Further Education and Training (FET) facilities are the Damelin College and the Capricorn College for FET who offer a wide range of training courses, both technical and management.
Christ Baptist Church has a seminary that offers certificates, diplomas and a Degree in Theology for those wanting to enter Christian Ministry.
Just North West of the City is the University of Limpopo. This superb University is the result of a merger between the former Medical University of Southern Africa and the University of the North, in 2005.
The Medical University of Southern Africa (MEDUNSA) was established in 1976 to provide tertiary education and training facilities to the educationally disadvantaged in the fields of Medicine, Allied Health and Nursing Sciences, and Dentistry intended to meet the health needs of the country.
The Campus is situated to the north-west of Pretoria. Its grounds extend over some 350 ha adjoining the Ga-Rankuwa Township and are easily accessible by roads and rail. Regular bus and taxi services operate between Pretoria and Dr George Mukhari Hospital as well as between Mabopane and Medunsa.
The University nestles in the foothills of the Hwiti (Wolkberg range) in Mankweng, midway between Polokwane and the spectacular splendour of Magoebaskloof.
